It looks like Notre Dame could have its starting quarterback for the 2023 season. Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman has entered the NCAA transfer portal as a graduate transfer, and the Fighting Irish are the favorites to land him, according to ESPN.
Hartman started parts of five seasons with the Demon Deacons and holds the ACC record for career touchdown passes at 110. His 12,967 career passing yards rank second in ACC history behind Philip Rivers (North Carolina State). He threw for 3,701 yards and 38 touchdowns this season after missing the season opener because of a blood clot.
Hartman would fill a need for Notre Dame after Drew Pyne transferred to Arizona State earlier this month. Tyler Buchner is expected to start for the Irish against South Carolina in the Gator Bowl on Friday. Buchner started the Irish's first two games at Ohio State and against Marshall before he underwent shoulder surgery and Pyne took over.
A positive Gator Bowl performance from Buchner could help him in the presumed starting QB battle against Sam Hartman. On the other hand, a strong showing could help Buchner find a new program if he wants to transfer.
