Notre Dame's quarterback competition won't become clearer after Saturday's Blue-Gold Game at Notre Dame Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Tyler Buchner will not play because of a right ankle injury. Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman told reporters the injury occurred when the signal-caller missed a stair walking around the team's facility. Buchner wore a brace on his right ankle at the spring game's draft Wednesday morning.
Buchner will be competing for the starting role with junior Drew Pyne for the 2022 season. Buchner was 21 of 35 for 298 yards and three touchdowns and three interceptions. The dual-threat QB rushed for 336 yards on 46 carries and three scores. Pyne was 15 of 30 for 224 yards and two touchdowns.
With Buchner out, Pyne will play for both the Blue and Gold teams Saturday. Bon Powlus III (Blue) and Steve Angeli (Gold) will also see time behind center. The Blue-Gold Game will kick off at noon Central time on Peacock.
