Imagine jumping on the Addison Red Line on a hot July day en route to Lakeview for a fun afternoon with your buddies. You're on the train and open up the game lines on your smartphone for the slate of baseball games to pass the time.
Then you remember there's a sportsbook outside Wrigley Field.
That scenario will soon become reality as the Chicago Cubs revealed today that a sportsbook is coming to Wrigley Field at some point in the future.
The North Siders announced a multi-year partnership with DraftKings to place a sportsbook somewhere near the outside of Wrigley Field.
Cubs VP of Business Crane Kenney joined 670 The Score to discuss more on the plan.
“We’re going to build a world class sportsbook where year-round -- not just for Cubs games but for every other event that draws a big group -- a great place to come watch games."
There are still a few steps the Cubs have to take before construction can begin. The club has not announced a timeline regarding an opening date just yet.
Wrigley Field must receive approval from the City of Chicago and DraftKings must apply for a master sports wagering license with the Illinois Gaming Board.
This is just the beginning for sportsbooks coming into Chicago. Currently, the only book in the Chicago area is Bet Rivers Casino in Rosemont. Mobile betting for DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook also recently became legal in Illinois.
PointsBet is also on the way.
