Cubs backup catcher Austin Romine will be sidelined several weeks with a significant sprain in his wrist according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.

Austin Romine has only appeared in six games for the Cubs in 2021, with only two of them being starts. He has one hit, a double, and one RBI this season in nine at-bats.

The Impact

The Cubs recalled catcher Tony Wolters from their South Bend alternate site to fill the backup catcher spot. The impact will undoubtedly be felt the most by Willson Contreras as he is going to get less off days due to the Romine injury. Add in the Cubs' early season struggles and Contreras is destined to play nearly everyday. I don't think Willson minds the lack of rest days, but who knows at what point in the season it will begin to catch up to him.

The Cubs are struggling, losing four-straight as of April 28th before their third game against the Braves. This injury hurts the Cubs depth as Romine is a very serviceable backup, especially when compared to Tony Wolters. There is no timeline set according to Jordan Bastian, so we will see how long Romine is ultimately sidelined.
