The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Chicago Cubs' Single-A affiliate, are heading to the Carolina League playoffs.
The Pelicans defeated the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (White Sox) 8-7 in 10 innings on Thursday to capture the Carolina League South Division first-half championship. With the title, the Pelicans secured their spot in the playoffs this fall.
It is the Pelicans' first playoff appearance since 2017 as they finished the first half with a 47-19 record. Myrtle Beach won the league title in 2015 and 2016, the first two years of its affiliation with the Cubs.
The Pelicans boast two top-10 prospects in the Cubs' system, with infielder James Triantos (No. 4) and outfielder Kevin Alcantara (No. 7). They also have infielders Reginald Preciado (No. 11) and Kevin Made (No. 15) and outfielder Yohendrick Pinango (No. 20).
Myrtle Beach and Kannapolis will start the second half of the season Friday.
