According to Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago, the Chicago Cubs will face the Cincinnati Reds in the 2022 Field of Dreams game.
Cubs manager David Ross spilled the beans on the big news last week when he said to reporters, "We're in that next year, right?"
After the major success the inaugural MLB Field of Dreams produced, it's no surprise that this would continue as an annual event. The iconic setting, a high-scoring thriller of a game, and stellar TV ratings all made the event more than worthwhile in 2021. Last Thursday's game in Iowa recorded over 5.9 million viewers, becoming MLB's most-viewed regular-season game in 16 years.
It's a bit surprising the Cubs weren't pitted against their longtime rival, the St. Louis Cardinals, especially considering the 2020 London Series featuring the two teams was canceled. However, the Reds make sense as an alternate opponent as well.
The game is reportedly scheduled for August 11, 2022, which is currently an off day for both the Cubs and Reds. The two clubs will tentatively play in Dyersville, Iowa on that date, make Friday the 12th an off-day, and resume their series in Cincinnati on Saturday the 13th.
Cubs fans, mark your calendars and cross your fingers that tickets are cheaper next year compared to this year's game, though it's not likely considering the limited capacity (approximately 8,000) of the recently constructed stadium.
