On Wednesday night, Chicago Cubs Manager David Ross let it slip that his team might be playing in the Field of Dreams game in 2022.

Ross asked the media members that were present, "We're in that next year right?" before quickly backtracking, realizing he might have spoiled the news, saying, "No, we're not, no, we're not," with a grin on his face.

The Cubs' skipper went on to say how much fun it would be to play there, but continued to backtrack saying that he hadn't heard anything about it.

Many Chicagoans will get a taste of the inaugural Field of Dreams game that will take place Thursday night in a specially constructed stadium adjacent to the movie site in Dyersville, Iowa. The Chicago White Sox are set to face the New York Yankees in this year's event.

If David Ross didn't misspeak and the news is true, who are the Cubs most likely to play? It seems extremely obvious that the St. Louis Cardinals would be the Cubs' opponent if they were to play at the Field of Dreams. It wouldn't come as a surprise to see the longtime rivals pitted against each other in a game themed after one of the most iconic baseball movies with such a memorable setting.

If a matchup between the two NL Central rivals in Iowa's cornfields comes to fruition, could it potentially replace the COVID-canceled Cubs vs. Cardinals London Series that was supposed to take place in 2020? There's no concrete information about either event available yet, but it's hard to imagine both teams being featured in both events.

Only time will tell if this slip-up from Ross is true, but it does seem like a realistic possibility. Be sure to follow me (@JoeMarras) and our Cubs coverage crew (@CubbiesOnTap) on Twitter for further updates as they become available.
