With the No. 7 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, the Chicago Cubs selected right-handed pitcher Cade Horton.

A top quarterback prospect coming out of high school, Horton chose to stick with baseball after committing to Oklahoma University. After tearing his UCL and undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2021, Horton returned to the mound in 2022 after being limited to strictly playing the field.

Horton hit his stride in the 2022 season when he finally returned to the starting rotation for the Sooners in May. In a span of four starts that began at the end of May, the right-hander dominated college hitters by allowing just nine runs in 23.2 innings with 36 strikeouts and six walks.

Throughout his college career, Horton was not on the top 100 pre-draft rankings lists. But that all changed in the 2022 College World Series when the Freshman All-American (Baseball America and D1 Baseball) made his mark. In two starts, the righty threw 13.1 innings with 24 strikeouts, all while surrendering only four runs and nine hits. For the college baseball playoffs as a whole, Horton dominated opposing hitters with a 2.81 ERA, 40 strikeouts, and just four walks in 25.2 innings.

In total, Horton made 14 college appearances with 11 starts, a 4.86 ERA, and a 5-2 record. With his high 90s fastball and a low 90s slider, Horton could develop into a dominant arm for the future Cubs’ starting rotation.

As for Cade Horton, he seems excited about joining the Chicago Cubs' organization.
