The Chicago Cubs have named an assistant hitting coach. On Monday, the team announced Johnny Washington is assuming the role beginning in 2022. Chris Valaika previously held the position.
Washington, 37, last spent his time as the hitting coach for the Hanwha Eagles in the KBO League over in South Korea. Prior to the 2021 season, Washington spent five seasons as the Double-A San Antonio hitting coach within the San Diego Padres organization.
As outlined in the Cubs press release above, Washington has plenty of coaching experience. Since retiring as a player in 2009, Washington spent time in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization before joining the Padres in 2016.
Washington was a 23rd-round draft pick by the Texas Rangers in 2003. He played seven years as a pro between the Rangers, Dodgers, and Independent ball.
