While everyone has enjoyed Labor Day and a Cubs' off day, the Chicago Cubs were busy passing from moves through the MLB office. On Monday, the Cubs placed LHP Justin Steele on the 15-day IL retroactive to September 2. In addition, the team has selected RHP Hayden Wesneski from Triple-A Iowa and designated RHP Kervin Castro for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Although the Cubs have yet to officially announce the move, the moves can be found on the MLB transactions page on the league website

Justin Steele's Additional Rest

Fans haven't seen Justin Steele on the mound since his August 26 start against the Milwaukee Brewers. Although having a solid outing, he was removed early with back tightness. He was able to rest when the Cubs traveled to Toronto, but the injury is clearly worse than expected if he's landing on the injured list.

Steele is having an ace-like season for the Cubs. The IL stint certainly adds doubt around the idea of him pitching again in 2022, but the Cubs might be valuing his future over the rest of this season. For the season, Steele has pitched 119.0 innings in 24 starts to the tune of a 3.18 ERA. However, he has been one of the top pitchers in the league since July 1. He looks primed for a big season in 2023.

Hayden Wesneski's Debut

With Steele landing on the IL, the Cubs need another starting pitcher. As a result, Hayden Wesneski will get his first look at the majors. Although he struggled in his very first start following the trade, Wesneski has settled in nicely and been incredible lately for the Iowa Cubs. Now, he should get his first start either Wednesday or Thursday with Wade Miley set to pitch on Tuesday.

Wesneski is one of many arms that will likely get a look with the team between now and the end of 2023. Wesneski is the Cubs' No. 12 ranked prospect and one of the more MLB-ready arms the team has. Seeing what he has with the season essentially over only benefits the timeline for the Cubs' evaluation of the right-hander.

Although fans might struggle watching this team late in the season, Wesneski's debut is certainly worth tuning into.
