Ahead of Saturday's game between the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins, the Cubs made a minor roster move. Having missed time with a shoulder strain, SS Andrelton Simmons has not played since early July. On Saturday, the Cubs reinstated the veteran shortstop from the IL and immediately designated him for assignment.

By designating Simmons for assignment, the Cubs do not have to make an adjustment to the 40-man roster. In fairness, the veteran's numbers haven't warranted a roster spot this season. In 35 games this season, Simmons is slashing .173/.244/.187 with no home runs and just seven RBI. In addition, Simmons has only one extra-base hit this season in the form of a double.

At the very least, the Cubs are seeing the value in their roster spots for the youngsters coming up. Rather than sending Nelson Velazquez down, for example, the Cubs don't need to make another move by letting Simmons walk. There is a chance the veteran shortstop remains in the organization at Triple-A, but chances are he'll take the Jonathan Villar route and ultimately ask for his release.
