"Jordan was on our top 10 internal board, meaning if he got to us we would definitely take him," Cubs vice president of scouting Dan Kantrovtiz told the media Sunday. "To get him is exciting. He is what we consider both stuff and makeup wise to be a potential big league starter. We thought he was the best college left-hander. We didn't anticipate that happening. When it did, we weren't going to pass him up."

The Cubs have also signed Arkansas outfielder Christian Franklin (fourth-round pick) and Quincy University left-hander Riley Martin (sixth round), according to Carlos Collazo of Baseball America. Chicago signed each player under slot value. Franklin signed for $425,000 ($39,500 under) and Martin for $1,000 ($262,700).
