Cubs Claim Phil Ervin Off Waivers From Seattle

The Chicago Cubs have claimed outfielder Phil Ervin off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.
According to Cubs beat writers, Ervin was was claimed by the Cubs on Tuesday. The 40-man roster now sits at 37.
Ervin, 27, is a four-year veteran who played for the Reds his first three and a half seasons of his career. He owns a career .247/.322/.406 slash line.

We've seen this time and time again with the Cubs front office taking a flyer on low risk, high reward type players. In 2019, Ervin posted a career best .271/.331/.466 slash line in a career high 94 games. After a career worst .149 batting average in 2020, Ervin looks to bounce back in 2021 with the Cubs.
It's still unclear what the Cubs offseason will look like come Opening Day. At this point, he's likely in play for a final roster spot near the end of Spring Training, pending his performance in March games.
