The Cubs designated outfielder Johneshwy Fargas for assignment earlier today. It was first reported by Jordan Bastian.

The move allows any MLB team to pick up Fargas off of waivers.

The Cubs themselves picked up Fargas via waivers from the Mets last month. The outfielder, best known for his speed, played 13 games for the Cubs this season, with splits of .269/.296/.346.

The DFA move makes room for starting pitcher Adrian Sampson, who was called up from Triple-A Iowa. Sampson will be a fill-in starter for today's game against the Reds.

With Jake Arrieta released and Adbert Alzolay headed to the IL, the Cubs were in need of an additional starter. Sampson last played in the majors in 2019 with the Texas Rangers, and has gone 4-5 with a 4.96 ERA in Iowa this season.
