Nick Madrigal was supposed to lead off and play second base in a Chicago Cubs' split-squad game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday afternoon. However, shortly before the game, Madrigal was scratched due to unknown reasons. Nico Hoerner took his spot at the top of the order, and Ildemaro Vargas replaced him at second base.
We've since learned that Madrigal's absence was due to leg fatigue. According to Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network, the team opted to hold Madrigal out as a precautionary move. Cubs fans can breathe a sigh of relief for now. Hopefully, it's as they're making it sound and nothing serious.
Wade Miley, whom the Cubs claimed off waivers from the Reds this offseason, was taking a lot of time to get ramped up. He is dealing with elbow soreness. An MRI showed some inflammation, and the team has shut him down for 10 days.
Without a timeline for return, Miley will begin the season on the injured list, which means Justin Steele and Alec Mills could be in line for spots in the Chicago Cubs rotation.
