The Chicago Cubs start a six-game road trip starting Friday with a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park.

The Cubs (52-65, fourth in NL Central) enter the road trip with an eight-game losing streak, which includes the past seven losses against two division leaders in the Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs kept the Brewers close in a doubleheader (4-2, 6-3), but then struggled to generate offense in losses of 10-0 and 17-4.

Chicago's homestand featured the beginning and end for two pitchers. Justin Steele made his first career MLB start. He allowed three runs on five hits, walked one, and struck out one in five innings in a 4-2 loss. Cubs legend Jake Arrieta, meanwhile, gave up eight runs on 11 hits and struck out three in four innings in a 10-0 loss then was released. Chicago also placed catcher Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list with a knee sprain, and activated catcher Austin Romine from the IL.

The Marlins (48-67, fifth in NL East) ended their losing streak at five games with a 7-0 win against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday to close a six-game road trip. Lewis Brinson hit two of Miami's three home runs, and Sandy Alcantara tossed seven innings in the win. Miami is expected to have manager Don Mattingly rejoin the team Friday after he tested positive for COVID-19 on July 31. Bench coach James Rowson served as acting manager while Mattingly was out.

Series History

The Cubs are 1-2 against the Marlins this season, losing the first two games (10-2, 11-1) before a 2-0 win during a three-game series in June at Wrigley Field.
