According to Taylor Mcgregor of Marquee Sports Network, the Chicago Cubs announced several roster moves before today’s afternoon matchup against the Colorado Rockies. Let’s dive into them.

Alzolay Reinstated from 60-Day IL

After hearing statements earlier this week from Cubs manager David Ross, it was only a matter of time before right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay was going to be reinstated from the IL before the end of the season. Alzolay, who’s spent the entire season recovering from a lat injury suffered this past offseason, is set to return to the Cubs’ pitching staff today in a bullpen role.

With just a few weeks left of the season, don’t expect Alzolay to be back to full in-season form, but a few appearances before the end of the year would be a huge momentum boost for the young righty heading into the 2023 season.

Schwindel and Newcomb DFA’d

To make room for Alzolay on the major league roster, the Cubs announced first baseman Frank Schwindel has been designated for assignment. Coming off a hot second half of 2021 in which Schwindel batted .342 with 13 home runs, 19 doubles, 40 RBI, and a 1.002 OPS in 56 games with the Cubs, there was a lot of high hopes for the slugging first baseman coming into 2022. However, this season Schwindel never seemed to find the magic in his bat that got Cubs fans paying attention to him in 2021. In 75 games this year he’s posted a slash line of .229/.277/.358 with just 8 home runs, 36 RBI, and 58 strikeouts.

With the combination of P.J Higgins and Alfonso Rivas platooning first base now for the Cubs, and the potential of Matt Mervis busting on the scene in 2023, it’s understandable that the Cubs would DFA Schwindel.

The Cubs also announced left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb has been DFA’d for the second time this season. Newcomb, who was picked up in a trade with the Atlanta Braves earlier this season in hopes of bolstering the Cubs’ bullpen, hasn’t seemed to find his groove so far this season. In 17 games Newcomb has posted a 9.13 ERA with 24 strikeouts, 14 walks, 26 hits, and a 1.809 WHIP in just 22.2 innings pitched.

Suzuki on Paternity List, Quiroz Selected

On a happy note, Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki has been placed on the paternity list for the arrival of his newborn child.

In 13 games so far in September Suzuki has posted a slash line of .304/.360/.522 with 14 hits including 3 home runs, 1 double, 5 RBI, 3 walks, and an .882 OPS. Don’t be surprised to see him pick up where he left off once he returns with his new “dad strength.”

With Suzuki hitting the paternity list, the Cubs selected infielder Esteban Quiroz from Triple-A Iowa. Quirow, who was aqcuired from the Cubs earlier this year in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays, has spent the majority of his 2022 season in Triple A. In 40 games with the Iowa Cubs he’s batted just .212, however, in his last 12 at bats he has 7 hits including 2 home runs, 2 doubles, 5 RBI, and 4 runs.
