As the season awards for Major League Baseball continue to hit the news cycle, one of the Chicago Cubs' breakout stars was snubbed of a finalist nomination. Rookie sensation Patrick Wisdom was not among the list of finalists for NL Rookie of the Year.
Wisdom broke out in 2021, finishing the season with a .231/.305/.518 slash line in addition to 28 home runs and 61 RBIs. The 30-year-old burst onto the scene in May after the Cubs faced numerous injuries to key depth pieces. Rather than become an afterthought on a Cubs roster filled with future uncertainty, Wisdom made a name for himself and blossomed into an instant sensation.
Naturally, his numbers came falling back to Earth after hitting .412 in his first 13 games. That said, Wisdom adjusted enough to make a difference while also setting the franchise rookie home run record along the way.
Looking ahead to 2022, Wisdom appears to be the Cubs' likely choice at third base. In fact, between his power bat and solid glove at the hot corner, the former first-round pick is the favorite to start on Opening Day at the position next season. However, the incredible 2021 season was not enough to be considered for the NL Rookie of the Year.
