After another brutal performance against the Phillies on Tuesday night, the Cubs have placed RHP Jake Arrieta on the 10-day IL with hamstring tightness.

The timing of the injury is certainly interesting, given Arrieta's last two starts. After pitching 1.2 innings, giving up six hits, seven runs (all earned), two walks, and striking out four, there were questions if Arrieta would remain in the rotation. His ninth loss of the season piggybacked his embarrassing eighth loss where the Cubs blew a 7-0 lead. In that game Arrieta also only pitched 1.2 innings, this time giving up four hits, six runs (three earned), four walks, and struck out only two.

Amid the injury, Arrieta will miss his next start. There was lots of speculation, as mentioned, following Tuesday's game whether or not he would keep his place in the rotation. For now, Arrieta's spot will be filled.

To fill Arrieta's place on the roster, the Cubs have recalled RHP Cory Abbott from Triple-A Iowa.

Abbott has pitched in four games with the Cubs this season. In those four games, he has a 4.32 ERA, six strikeouts, and five walks in 8.1 innings of work. At Triple-A Iowa, Abbott is 1-3 with a 5.88 ERA, 64 strikeouts, and 18 walks in 41.1 innings. The right-hander has been a starter in Iowa, starting eight games so far this season.

The Cubs look to snap their 11-game losing streak on Wednesday night against the Phillies. Alec Mills takes the mound for the Cubs against Zach Wheeler for the Phillies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT at Wrigley Field.
