The wait is over! Over the last few days, the Iowa Cubs have been teasing a new on-field cap for the 2022 season. Today, they released a cool video, revealing their new hats. I must say, they look phenomenal! Take a look for yourself.
If you like what you see, the Iowa Cubs are making this design available at different capacities in the Iowa Cubs Team Store. The logo is approved for on-field use starting next season. It will replace the block “I” as a character-based alternate logo.
A Refresh on a Timeless Brand
The primary logo and team colors will remain the same, but this logo will work as a fresh change of pace and complementary hat, which reflects the Cubs’ farm system history. The Tennessee Smokies and South Bend Cubs both make use of the bear as a part of their logos. Moreover, this new logo displays a focused and hungry-looking version of the team’s mascot, Cubbie Bear. In their own words, “The new logo shows a fierce, determined image of a bear. It provides a glimpse into the competitive side of our mascot, Cubbie Bear."
The team will feature it on a solid blue cap at home and a multi-colored alternate hat will pair with road or Sunday red alternate jerseys.
“We wanted to have a logo that you can easily associate with the Iowa Cubs,” said team President and General Manager Sam Bernabe. “The character logo is not a re-brand or major change to our organization, but does aim our focus towards the next generation of Iowa Cubs fans,” Bernabe said.
There’s also some history with who designed the logo. Dan Simon of Studio Simon created the Iowa Caucuses alternate logo in 2019. The Iowa Cubs have always drawn attention from presidential candidates, making trips to Principal Park while visiting Iowa. On August 30, 2019, the Iowa Cubs used his logo design to begin the Labor Day weekend series.
Tying it all together, Studio Simon has also designed the marks of the High-A South Bend Cubs and Double-A Tennessee Smokies. The new logo continues to tie the teams that make up the farm system together.
