According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the Chicago Cubs are reportedly discussing trade possibilities involving Yu Darvish with the San Diego Padres.
Not even 24 hours after the Padres traded for Blake Snell late Sunday night, San Diego is in talks with the Cubs about another potential blockbuster trade.
This development comes as a bit of a surprise to most Cubs fans. The Padres sent their top pitching prospect, Luis Patiño, right-handed pitching prospect Cole Wilcox, and catchers Blake Hunt and Francisco Mejia to Tampa Bay in exchange for Snell.
Snell is due just $39 million over the next three seasons, which might be why the Padres are now interested in Darvish's services. Darvish, who is coming off a Cy Young contending season, is due $58 million over the next three seasons.
With Snell, the Padres now look to take over the NL West crown after years of consecutive division titles by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Cubs are in an interesting situation where trading Darvish would only make sense if the return is fruitful for them. The organization is in a spot where cutting payroll and retooling their roster is a primary focus this offseason.
The Padres are coming off their first playoff appearance in over a decade and are looking to become true World Series contenders.
It will be interesting to see what prospects are being discussed in return for Darvish if this potential trade actually comes to fruition.
