The Cubs took care of business on the South side with a little help from a few inopportune walks courtesy of Sox pither Lucas Giolito.
When the Cubs and Sox get together it is always a great rivalry. The real spotlight was on the pitching match up. Cubs ace, Jon Lester (7-6, 3.89 ERA), took the bump to face off against the South siders. It was a great match up of two aces as the Sox trotted out Lucas Giolito, who is having a Cy Young caliber season.
The Cubs started out the scoring early with a top of the first Kris Bryant RBI single, scoring Javier Baez, and giving the Cubs the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Sox would pull even with a RBI single by Jose Abreu. Abreu drove in Yoan Moncada making it 1-1.
In the top of the fifth, the Cubs blew this one wide open with five walks in the inning, two doubles, and a single. The score was 6-1 in favor of the North siders after the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Sox would start their come back. The Sox scored two runs of their own and made it a close game courtesy of a Yoan Moncada RBI double and a RBI ground out. The score was 6-3 Cubs, but the Sox were inching closer.
In the bottom of the ninth, Cubs newly acquired closer, Craig Kimbrel, came in to shut the door. However, there was drama as the Sox brought the tying run up to the plate against Kimbrel. Kimbrel was able to work out of the jam and showed flashes of his normal self. The Cubs came out victorious, 6-3, in game one at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The Cubs received aid in the standings, as the Brewers lost to the Pirates, and the Cubs now hold first place in the NL Central, with a 0.5 game lead on the Brewers. FLY THE W!
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Projected future hall of famer Jon Lester pitched a gem on Saturday, and for that he is the player of the game. Jon went six and a third innings, only allowing three runs and holding the hot bats of the Chicago White Sox in check.
The series finale proves to be a good one. Finesse man Kyle Hendricks (7-6, 3.45 ERA) goes against hard throwing right hander Ivan Nova (3-7, 5.92 ERA). This should be a great matchup.
