Another move that occurred on Friday was the Cubs trading Jake Marisnick to San Diego to join the Padres. Marisnick signed a one-year deal in the offseason with the Cubs and has been a nice depth player all season.

The team went all out, gutting the roster ahead of the July 30 trade deadline. As the trade becomes official, it sounds like RHP Anderson Espinoza is the return for Marisnick.

In 65 games for the Cubs this season, Marisnick slashed .227/.294/.438 with five home runs and 22 RBIs. He served well as a depth outfielder for the Cubs, but likely didn't have much of a future with the team.

As for Espinoza, he was ranked as the #9 prospect in the Padres' system. At High-A ball this season, Espinoza is 0-1 with a 5.02 ERA in 12 starts. In addition, he has 37 strikeouts but 13 walks, suggesting there are some control issues for the right-hander as of now. That said, work in the pitching lab could turn him into a serviceable major league arm at some point in time.
