You read that correctly. Jon Lester vowed to buy the first Miller Lite for all patrons at four Chicago bars this weekend.
Lester wanted to repay the fans after six great years in Chicago. The door isn't closed yet on Lester returning to the Cubs, but there is a chance he's wearing different colors next season. The Cubs declined Lester's 2021 option and paid out $10 million to avoid picking up the $25 million option Lester had.
That said, as a thank you, he bought the first Miller Lite for anyone at Hop Smith, Lodge Tavern, Butch McGuire's, and Shenannigans on Division Street in Chicago.
Like he said, just tell them to put it on Jon's tab. After two days, Lester spent around $47K on all the beer at the four locations after buying 4,838 Miller Lite's.
Lester took the cool gesture a step further. He was tipping 34% at all of the locations in honor of the number he wore for six seasons with the Cubs.
Jon Lester is beloved by the city of Chicago and will likely never have to buy another beer in this city. Cubs fans are hoping Lester isn't done with the Cubs just yet, but he is ensuring his love for the city and its fans is being felt as free agency opens.
