Last week, Washington running back Derrius Guice was arrested on three counts of domestic violence from incidents earlier this year. Hours later, the Washington Football Team released Guice from their roster. Guice came into the NFL in 2018 but had made little impact in the league due to serious injuries in the last two seasons. Many believed that a healthy Guice would be poised for a breakout season in 2020. Who is going to take his place?
Next Man Up
Adrian Peterson, who is now 35 years old, is presumably the starter after the departure of Guice. The Washington Football Team decided to bring back Peterson this offseason, so he would be the clear choice over other guys in the room like Peyton Barber and J.D. McKissic. In 2019, Peterson tallied 898 rushing yards and five scores on the ground. As great as Peterson is, I don’t expect him to bring much to the table when it comes to receiving production.
Rookie Antonio Gibson out of Memphis was a very interesting player that the Washington Football Team selected in the third round of this year’s draft. In college, Gibson was a wide receiver that also got some run out of the backfield. He had a very promising combine — running a 4.39 40-yard dash at 220 pounds is no small feat. After the draft, the Washington coaching staff made it clear that Gibson would be used in the backfield and as a receiver. With the departure of Guice and Gibson's receiving prowess, I would expect to see Gibson handle the lion’s share of third-down and passing opportunities. At Memphis, he only had 33 rushing attempts and very few opportunities to block out of the backfield. For Gibson to get that third-down work, he will need to show he has those skills refined enough to make it on the field.
Barber and McKissic should not be on any fantasy teams this year unless... well no, they just shouldn’t be at all. Bryce Love is someone I will be keeping my eye on throughout training camp and as the season nears, but I don’t have high expectations for the former Stanford star. Peterson is worth an add in deeper leagues and will provide you with a serviceable floor in some weeks, but the name of value is going to be Gibson. The possible upside with Gibson could pay off dividends this season if you are able to snag him in one of your later rounds.
