Midfielder Federico Navarro is set to join the Chicago Fire from CA Talleres, a club in Argentina's top division. Jeremy Mikula of the Chicago Tribune first reported the news. The Fire have yet to officially announce Navarro.
There is no announcement on a reported fee either, but Transfermarkt values Navarro at $5.5 million.
Navarro has been playing in a fairly central, holding midfield role for Talleres. There is not much on him in terms of stats. According to FB Ref, Navarro has played only 21 professional matches in his career, so the player will be a bit raw heading into Major League Soccer.
However, many have labeled him one of the best, young defensive midfielders in Argentina over the past year. Navarro may not start right away, but he will offer some flexibility in the middle of the pitch, potentially sending up the likes of Gastón Giménez and Álvaro Medrán higher up in attacking roles.
It also may prove to be good timing as Giménez has a club option for 2022. If the Fire deem Gimenez and his high salary as surplus to plans, Navarro could be the perfect replacement.
