The Chicago Fire won their third straight match for the first time this season with a 3-1 victory against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday at BC Place.

Chris Mueller and Xherdan Shaqiri each had a goal and an assist for the Fire (7-10-5, 26 points), which are two points below the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Chicago goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina made two saves.

"It's a very big win for us, probably one of the bigger wins that we've had this year," Fire coach Ezra Hendrickson said. "We just wanted to be consistent and continue with this momentum that we built at home, and the boys came out tonight and did just that."

Lucas Cavallini scored for the Whitecaps (7-10-5, 26 points), who are winless in their past four matches (0-1-3). Julian Gressel had one shot in his Vancouver debut after being acquired from DC United.

Shaqiri curled a right-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the bottom corner for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. The Swiss midfielder leads the Fire with four goals this season.

Cavallini tied it 1-1 in the 53rd minute when he flicked a shot in mid-air with his left foot past Slonina's left arm.

Mueller lofted the ball into the box for captain Rafael Czichos, who headed it into the net for a 2-1 Fire lead in the 76th minute. Czichos has scored in back-to-back matches and three of his past four matches.
