The first player of the 2021 Notre Dame Draft class is officially off the board. The Miami Dolphins selected offensive lineman Liam Eichenberg with the 42nd overall pick. Eichenberg will join fellow rookies Jaelan Phillips, Jaylen Waddle, and Jevon Holland in Miami.

Eichenberg, a former captain at Notre Dame, looks to protect Tua Tagovailoa's blindside for years to come. Selecting Eichenberg at this slot was the perfect pick for the Dolphins given how their first three selections panned out. They attacked the skill positions and now give Tua about as durable of a left tackle available in the second round of the NFL Draft.

As for how the Dolphins landed at this spot, the New York Giants weren't expected to select Eichenberg so they decided to deal their 42nd pick to the Dolphins in exchange for the 50th overall pick and a third-rounder in 2022.

The 6-foot-6, 302 lb tackle logged 38 starts at Notre Dame and hadn't allowed a sack over the last two seasons. He is about as tough as they come and has played through various injuries, including his famous black eye. Eichenberg is an excellent locker room presence, and he could be projected to start at some point this season.

He is extremely physical at the point of attack and always made sure to take care of Irish quarterback Ian Book. With the Dolphins trending toward a playoff berth last year and already adding several impactful pieces in the draft, it will be a competitive camp for Eichenberg as he looks to snag a starting role.
