Chicago Comedian of the Week

It’s no secret that Chicago is a breeding ground for some of the biggest names in comedy. Immense talents from both the worlds of improv and stand up have cut their teeth on our stages. But, were you aware that most comedians get good here then move to one of the coasts?

We here at On Tap Sports Net have decided it’s time to shine a spotlight on the local talent in hopes that with the support of you, dear reader, our all-stars stay in Chicago! New York and LA can develop their own. Chicago is a Triple-A city to nobody! This week, our spotlight is on Ed Towns.

Comedian of the Week: Ed Towns

Ed Towns is a Chicago native and producer of one of the best independent stand-up comedy showcases in the country, Comedians You Should Know at Timothy O’Toole’s every Wednesday (when life gets back to normal). Ed also hosts Trigger Warning Open Mic at the Sedgewick Stop. Trigger Warning is famous for being a tough mic. If a comedian can get laughs there, they can anywhere. The mic has a 'Live at the Apollo' vibe. Ed is an absolute force on stage. All gas and no brakes!

Getting to Know Ed Towns

What is your favorite moment in comedy?

"Favorite moment in comedy might have been 6 years ago. Pretty much I was mostly an open-micer and not getting booked a whole lot. I was doing great on most stages but it seemed like no one cared. I was at an open mic on a Sunday. I even remember the venue was Reeds Local. I did my set and went to the bar and Danny Kallas, Comedians You Should Know founder, who at the time I didn’t even think he knew who I was, came to me and asked to talk outside. Then he told me, 'I see what you’re doing and you’re on the right path. It’s gonna take you longer to get booked, but stay doing you.' He put his smoke out and went back in the bar and I (no lie) started to cry. I was super full of doubt wondering what the fuck am I doing and why? Danny was the first comic to acknowledge my work and it was practically career-saving."

Who's your favorite Chicago athlete and why?

"Hands down Derrick Rose. Homegrown and I have never seen any athlete's game grow that fast from year to year. He had no jumper year one to deadly 3-point range by year 3. At one time I said I couldn’t believe I got to see Jordan and Derrick Rose in my lifetime. If only he took the same steroids LeBron did in high school his career would have played out completely different."

If you could heckle any celebrity while they did stand up, who would it be and why?

"Aaron Rodgers. I wanna finally see him rattled for once in my life."

What's your favorite Chicago bar?

"It’s been so long since I’ve been to a bar I can’t even remember, LOL. I gotta say Village Tap in Roscoe Village. Before the pandemic they ran my favorite Monday night show and on top of that they hosted my wedding."

What is the best Super Bowl appetizer?

"Chorizo stuffed bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers hands down! Real easy to make and will trick anybody into thinking you know how to cook."
