2021 was already a solid lock for the worst year ever, but with 2022 on the horizon it has now cemented that title. Betty White passed away on Dec. 31, 2021, at the age of 99. White would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 17, 2022. White was born in Oak Park, IL, although she spent almost her entire juvenile life in southern California.

Betty White has been a staple in the world of radio, TV, and film for a very, very long time. For context, her first credit was from a radio show called Empire Builders on Dec. 22, 1930 at age 8. Her first TV credit came in the summer of 1939 with the experimental show The Merry Widow. That TV show was about a month before The Wizard of Oz hit movie theaters.

Betty White has had a number of iconic roles in her career. Most notably she played Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls. Those two roles account for three of her five Emmy wins.
