The head of Playstation Studios, Hermen Hulst, has confirmed the highly anticipated sequel to 2018's God of War will be delayed until 2022. He states in an interview that since the developers currently have two separate single-player and narrative-driven games in development, one must be delayed for maximum quality. The official Twitter handle of The Game Awards confirmed it here as well:

In the interview, Hermen described how the development teams were working on God of War and Horizon Forbidden West. The team working on God of War started later than the other, already setting them up for a difficult timeline. Pandemic or not, it would be difficult for a team collaboration to give maximum effort on two narrative-driven stories simultaneously.

The other bit of news that came out of this interview was the game being developed for both PS5 and PS4. This is fantastic news for people like me, who don't have a PS5 yet. It's rather concerning for some fans who claim this will water down the quality of the game. I disagree. If Santa Monica Studios, who put their heart and soul into GOW 2018, believes they can pull off the cross-generation feat then we must trust in them. It's possible that some of the graphics will suffer on the PS4, but is that a real complaint? The PS4 has some of the best graphics we've ever seen in gaming.

Fan Response

Fans of the series have not taken kindly to the announcements. Some fans feel it was a disservice to slip this news into an interview on PlayStation's blog. Some fans have even dropped so low as to send nasty messages to some members of the Santa Monica Studios team. God of War director Cory Barlog is not happy with these disgusting fans.

It's quite sad to see some fans reacting this way. Four years in between God of War games is not a long time to wait. I would rather them delay it and give the fans a fantastic sequel rather than rush it to meet a deadline. This news is perfectly fine for real God of War fans. If more time is what they need to finish the game properly then that's exactly what they should do.

God of War 2018 was an absolute masterpiece. It would be very unfortunate if they followed that up with a lackluster sequel. Given the electric ending in the "post-credit" scene, doing it right is the most important thing.
