HBO's newest hit TV show House of the Dragon has been renewed for a second season. The announcement comes less than one week after the series premiered. The show has been a ratings smash hit for HBO with over 10 million views when it premiered and now passing the 20-million mark. That is more viewers than any episode of Game of Thrones ever had. Francesca Orsi of HBO programming had high praise for the show in a recent press release.

"We are beyond proud of what the entire HOUSE OF THE DRAGON team has accomplished with season one. Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two."

- Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming

House of the Dragon takes place about 200 years before the events of Thrones commence. It covers the events of the Great Council meeting to name an heir for ailing King Jaehaerys Targaryen. It's a fitting bookend since Game of Thrones ended with another Great Council naming Bran Stark King of the Seven Kingdoms.
