Baseball has been gone for what has felt like an eternity. Out here in the second city, the "main" baseball team has been playing second fiddle in the news cycle, and that has set my mind to wandering. Typically that results in madness, but every so often my brain lands somewhere worth exploring. To wit, I offer up the following question: You have to win a pickup baseball game, and you've got one player to fill out the team as your stud — Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, or Pablo "Secret Weapon" Sanchez. Who do you pick?
Let's open with Pablo Sanchez because there may be some in need of a refresher. Pablo Sanchez is the ultimate competitor in the Backyard Sports franchise. Making his debut in 1997's Backyard Baseball, the world was introduced to the "Secret Weapon." Maxed out in all stats except for pitching, he was a dynamo on the diamond. Pablo can hit the ball a country mile and could use his speed to leg out an extra-base almost at will. He's a strong contender.
Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez is built like the kid who would be the best on the field. He's everything the scouts AND Jonah Hill wanted out of a ballplayer in the movie Moneyball. Benny never let adversity get in his way, be it in a pickle on the schoolyard, showing the local ball team how it's done, or even sub-optimal conditions, cranking a dinger during a night game using only the light of fireworks above him to pick up the movement on a heater and turn on it.
Since the goal is to win one game, I'm inclined to take Benny here. For my money, the IT factor just can't be ignored. He once outran The Beast, and I need someone prepared to put it all on the line.
