Squid Game Director Hwang Dong-hyuk Hopes Season 2 Will Release on Netflix in Late 2024

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk was recently speaking in a session at MipTV, per Variety. Hwang revealed that his next project will be titled "Killing Old People Club" and that it will be more violent than even Squid Game. He also shared a quick but important detail about Season 2 of his mega-hit show. He's hoping to have it ready for release on Netflix by the end of 2024.
Can Squid Game Go Three Years Between Seasons?
Squid Game took the world by storm when it was released on Netflix in September 2021. We've seen plenty of shows come out the gate hot, but this put show put all others before and after to shame. Netflix shares some of its viewership data, including streaming hours for new releases and all-time Top 10 lists. In its first 28 days on Netflix, Squid Game streamed for 1,650,450,000 hours on the platform. Compare that to the rest of the catalog, and you could remove 1,000,000,000 hours from the total and it would still be the #1 program. In just 28 days, the people of Earth watched the equivalent of 188,278.6 YEARS of Squid Game. But will fans still be hungry for more after the lengthy holdover? I'd expect it will have a dropoff. Unless the show is up to the standards of season 1 it will quickly fade from memory.

Plenty of shows and movies spend a decent chunk of time between seasons and sequels, so it's not all doom and gloom. Heck, James Cameron's is betting that 13 years isn't too long for an Avatar sequel. Hopefully Netflix allows Hwang to develop and shoot multiple seasons of Squid Game so we don't have another dry spell.
