Roku, the streaming service, has a potentially massive movie coming out in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. The movie is a dramatic biopic based on "Weird" Al Yankovic's life. As we see in the trailer, there will be plenty of dramatic liberties taken.
The movie is directed by Eric Appel, and written by Appel and Yankovic. In 2010, Appel directed a fake trailer for Funny or Die under the same title, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. That trailer is absolutely hilarious and provides a road map of what the full-length movie will look like. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this movie is giving me mega Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story vibes and I'm here for it.
What's On Tap Next?
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will tell the tale of Weird Al's rise to music superstardom. The minute-long trailer displays shots of packed arenas and windows into Yankovic's past. We also get a look at Rainn Wilson's version of Dr. Demento, which is very exciting.
The biggest reveal in the trailer was that they got the casting for Weird Al PERFECT. Daniel Radcliffe is going to be forever remembered for playing Harry Potter in the movie franchise, and rightly so. But since the series wrapped, Radcliffe has done basically whatever he wants. He made his money as Harry and just chooses whatever weird indie project he wants. Who better to play Weird Al?
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will release in the Fall of 2022. We will keep you updated on when an exact date locks in.
