Whether you're a longtime fan of Resident Evil or a casual, Netflix's brand new animated series Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is a fast-paced adrenaline rush. I didn't know what to expect from this series. It's only four episodes long, with each episode running approximately 30 minutes. This show starts with a bang and tells a very lore-infused Resident Evil story that will leave fans of every nature satisfied.

Minor spoilers ahead.

Basic Plot

The majority of Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness takes place in 2006, after the events of Resident Evil 4. Leon is not the Raccoon City Police Department rookie he once was. He's seen terror and battled through countless enemies at this point.

President Graham is forever grateful to Leon for saving his daughter during Resident Evil 4 and that plays a major role in the continuation of their relationship in this series.

Several years prior, the civil war of Panamstan ravages everything. In the present day, Claire is building schools and other necessities for the community. The civil war events are told in flashbacks. Someone releases a form of bio-organic weapon (BOW) upon the city. The local rebels wipe out the U.S. soldiers as well as much of the city and it wouldn't be Resident Evil without a government cover-up. Claire discovers the possibility of a BOW attack in Panamstan and thus sets into motion her main storyline of the series.

President Graham summons Leon to the White House to assist in an investigation into a cyber attack that they believe China was behind. A BOW attack on the White House shakes everyone up and then everything changes. The President has tasked Leon with uncovering the truth behind it all.

Meanwhile, Claire travels back to the United States and begins questioning the military and government's involvement in the Panamstan civil war. She starts asking dangerous questions and gets herself into trouble once again.

I'll end the storyline recap here, but if you want to know the rest you can spoil it yourself here.

Leon and Claire

It was very refreshing to have Leon and Claire return in Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. I thoroughly enjoyed both characters as they got themselves involved in another BOW situation like Raccoon City. My only complaint was we didn't see enough of Claire.

She was not the central focus of the story and with only four short episodes it's understandable as to why. However, I really enjoy her character overall in the RE universe and I wish she was involved just a bit more.

Leon was great in this series. He's clearly going through a lot internally and that shows in his body language. His skill in killing BOWs is showcased beautifully with some over-the-top action and has a very video-game feel to it.

Bio-Organic Weapons (BOW)

We didn't only see zombies in this series. The BOWs in Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness have a mild spectrum but they're new, unique, and frankly just cool.

I really liked the new form of terror they were trying to show and thought it worked well in anime. Viruses causing wicked mutations and cures or antidotes for them are a staple of the RE universe and there's no deviation in this series.

Now What?

This series ends on a tame cliffhanger. The main events of this show are resolved but the future of Leon and Claire is not so clear. I'm very curious to see where Netflix plans on taking this in a second season or even another animated movie. The timeline of RE canon has plenty of room for them to work in however, if they're not careful, then it could get very messy before it's over.

This show is absolutely a must-see for all Resident Evil fans and also for all zombie fans. It contains exciting action, intriguing dialogue, and a fun story. When you begin this show, get your snacks ready first because this one starts fast and doesn't have enough run-time to take its foot off the gas.
