The United States Women's National Team added Chicago Red Stars defender Kasey Krueger to its 2020 Olympic soccer roster as a full member Friday.
The news comes after the International Olympic Committee and confirmed by FIFA that countries could select 22 players for their respective squads. Each team must select 18 players for matches. The USWNT previously slated Krueger, goalkeeper Jane Campbell (Houston), midfielder Catarina Macario (Lyon), and forward Lynn Williams (North Carolina) as alternates.
Prior to the move, Krueger only could've played in a match if a full member player was removed from the 18-player roster because of injury.
"I'm incredibly excited about the news," Krueger said in a release. "With that said, my mindset doesn't change. I'm grateful for this opportunity and no matter what role I'm asked to play, I'll do anything and everything I can to help the team be successful."
Krueger has three assists in 34 appearances with the USWNT. She most recently served as a substitute in the USWNT's 3-1 win against Japan in the 2021 SheBelieves Cup.
Krueger, a Naperville Central alumnae, joins Red Stars teammates Tierna Davidson, Julie Ertz and Alyssa Naeher on the USWNT Olympic squad. Red Stars head athletic trainer Emily Fortunato will also be with the team in Tokyo.
