Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa provided an update on veteran relief pitcher Joe Kelly prior to Sunday's series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays. Kelly, who signed with the White Sox this offseason, has spent the first week of the season rehabbing from an offseason injury in Arizona. According to La Russa, Kelly's latest bullpen session went well.
With Joe Kelly Nearly facing live hitters in Arizona, it would seem that is the last step before he heads to Charlotte for a rehab assignment. This apparently puts him in line to make his way to Chicago sometime in mid-May barring any unforeseen setbacks. A few weeks ago, reports indicated that Kelly was aiming for a late April return. However, the White Sox seem to be erring on the side of caution with their offseason acquisition.
Upon Kelly's return to Chicago, he will join a bullpen that has been a major strength for the South Siders this season. He figures to join fellow free agent acquisition Kendal Graveman at the backend of the pen, setting up for closer Liam Hendriks.
