Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Dylan Cease has had a masterful start to the 2022 season. The Sox acquired the right-hander and headliner Eloy Jimenez in a 2017 trade that sent pitcher Jose Quintana to the Chicago Cubs. Now in his fourth season on the South Side, Cease has become one of the most deceptive pitchers in the game as he leads MLB with a 13.1 SO9 rate.
On Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, Cease reached the 500-strikeout milestone by fanning Jose Miranda in the bottom of the fifth inning. It was his seventh strikeout of the afternoon, and he followed it by fanning Nick Gordon for his 501st career punchout.
Cease also made Chicago White Sox history by becoming the fastest pitcher to reach 500 career strikeouts. He surpassed future Hall of Famer Chris Sale in the process.
Dylan Cease recorded a career-high 226 strikeouts during the 2021 campaign. He looks poised to challenge that figure in 2022. Entering Sunday, the righty had already racked up 142 strikeouts through 18 starts.
