Jose Abreu and Yermin Mercedes

Jose Abreu had some advice for Chicago White Sox rookie Yermin Mercedes. The 2020 MLB American League MVP told the 28-year-old Mercedes not to get caught up in the month-to-month stats.

Yermin Mercedes started off the 2021 MLB season on fire. Mercedes collected hits in his first eight games and led the MLB in batting average through the month of April. Yermin batted .415 with 34 hits, five home runs, 16 RBIs, and 10 runs scored in 22 games in April. That's incerdibly impressive.

The man known as "The Yerminator" was gathering praise from national media outlets and fans alike. Then, the month of May happened. Yermin had a .221 batting average with 21 hits, two home runs, 14 RBIs, and nine runs scored in 28 games last month. He struggled mightily at the plate by swinging at pitches out of the zone. Yermin seems to be swinging the bat too early and fouling many pitches off as well. The timing is just not there. Now, it's entirely possible the rookie has hit the "rookie wall."

As Jose Abreu said, don't get caught up in the month-to-month statistics. If Abreu did that, he might have given up early. Abreu batted .213 with 20 hits, five home runs, 19 RBIs, and 11 runs scored in 25 games in April. The veteran started off slow and then followed up with an MVP-like month in May. Abreu hit .333 with 28 hits, six homers, 27 RBIs, and 16 runs scored in 25 games last month. Abreu's OBP was .422, he slugged .631, and had an OPS of 1.053.

The point is, the advice Jose Abreu gave to Yermin Mercedes is worth it's weight in gold. Having a veteran leader like Abreu who has struggled and turned it around could provide Mercedes with the confidence he needs.
