Prior to Wednesday's game against the Houston Astros, the Chicago White Sox placed utility man Leury Garcia on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain. In a corresponding move, the club recalled infielder Romy Gonzalez from Triple-A Charlotte.
Due to a swarm of White Sox' injuries to date, Leury Garcia has played six different positions across 83 games for the South Siders this season. But the 31-year-old has struggled mightily at the plate, slashing .212/.238/.275 with three home runs and 19 RBIs in 288 plate appearances.
After dealing with a host of his own injury issues, Gonzalez gets his first call to the big league club in 2022. In just 38 games this season, the 25-year-old is slashing .232/.312/.442 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs. Gonzalez made his MLB debut last season with the White Sox. He recorded eight hits, including three doubles, in 33 plate appearances during his 10-game stint with the South Siders.
Romy Gonzalez will play shortstop and bat ninth Wednesday night for the Chicago White Sox.
