White Sox Get Joe Kelly Back But Lose Liam Hendriks to IL

The "one step forward, one step back" theme continues for the 2022 White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox shuffled four pitchers in a series of Tuesday roster moves. As expected, Joe Kelly is back from the injured list. But Liam Hendriks will now head to the 15-day IL (retroactive to June 11) due to a right forearm strain. Additionally, the club sent Bennett Sousa to Triple-A Charlotte and recalled Davis Martin.

Kelly initially landed on the injured list on May 26 due to a strained left hamstring. On the season, the veteran righty has a 9.53 ERA, 3.50 FIP, and eight strikeouts in just 5.2 innings of work. A fatigued White Sox bullpen will likely rely on Joe Kelly heavily during the upcoming stretch of games.

As for Liam Hendriks, he last appeared on June 10 when he recorded the final outs of a Sox win over the Texas Rangers. The Chicago White Sox initially looked to avoid placing him on the injured list, but those plans didn't come to fruition. Kendall Graveman, who locked down the ninth inning Monday in Detroit, will presumably assume the closer role in Hendriks' absence.
