Former first-round pick Nick Madrigal is ready to make an immediate impact for the Chicago White Sox.

The second base situation on the South Side of Chicago is something that fans have been tilting their heads about even when Yolmer Sanchez manned the position in past years. Now, Danny Mendick, Leury Garcia, and Madrigal are all options to fill in at the four-spot.

Madrigal has impressed a lot of people throughout his time in the minors, compiling a .309 batting average across each level with just 21 strikeouts in over 700 plate appearances. His summer camp games have also raised the brows of many. He’s shown that he can put the bat on the ball. Even pitches that shouldn’t be put in play end up deposited into the outfield for base knocks.

Dating back to his shortened spring, he hit just over .220 with a .250 on-base percentage, but many players use Spring Training as a time to get the rust off. Many times, those numbers are not a microcosm of what can be expected during the regular season.

Prior to Summer Camp, the assumption was that Madrigal would likely make his Major League debut sometime later in the year, according to what Rick Hahn has stated. However, with the oddity of this 2020 campaign and the 23-year-old’s ability to adapt quickly to the pitching he has seen in the past weeks, fans should not be surprised if he finds himself in the lineup on July 24th against the Minnesota Twins. Regardless of when “Madrigal Day” is, all signs point to him being ready for the bigs.
