Today the unthinkable happened... the White Sox lost out on prime talent to the fucking Padres. What a shitshow.. what a mess. Not long ago everyone's buddy ol' pal Rick Hahn was addressing the media mentioning how much money our Sox WILL spend. Even more recently, the White Sox front office was waltzing around SoxFest like they were the hottest thing in town, answering seemingly every question related to Machado with some general confidence. At the beginning of Spring Training they even left an open locker in between Jay and Alonso in case this all went down (might as well just give that locker to Brandon Guyer or Kenny Powers or some shit, who cares anyways). All of that has resulted in major disappointment. A complete slap in the face to every loyal, paying White Sox fan like myself and many others. I'm so glad that I didn't buy a season ticket package because I now know that all of that money is going straight into asshat Jerry Reinsdorf's wrinkled pocket. To come this far just for the "moral victory" absolutely sucks the life out of a hungry fanbase.
So now that this is our reality, what's next? I don't even want to think that we somehow woo Bryce Harper to the South Side because that ain't happening people. Here's what needs to happen: the White Sox organization as a whole needs to take a long look in the mirror and reevaluate what the hell they want to do. If they want to be mediocre for the foreseeable future and not be an ideal free agent destination with no winning culture in sight, be that way. Have fun being a perennial loser and losing loyal fans that simply want a winning product. Just don't build up hopes that management will act in the team's best interest just to fall short. If they want to be competitive, then go out and spend some damn coin. While there is plenty of optimism within the organization, recent World Series winners haven't won it all on internal talent alone. It simply doesn't happen. Let's take a look back at this point: Boston acquired Chris Sale, Craig Kimbrel, David Price, JD Martinez, and Nathan Eovaldi. Houston acquired Justin Verlander, Ken Giles and Josh Reddick. The Cubs acquired Jon Lester, Ben Zobrist, Dexter Fowler, and Aroldis Chapman. These teams had holes in their organization and they filled them with premier talent from outside of the organization. They did what was required of them to win... SACKING THE FUCK UP. You have to fork up money to win, and in the long run winning pays for itself. Ticket sales, jersey sales, TV deals, etc.
It's a sad day for the White Sox faithful, but I hope you all are handling it better than I am. I hope that Rick and Co. prove me wrong; but if they don't, we could be looking at the future Portland White Sox soon enough. Depressing.
