The stove is very HOT right now if you are a Chicago White Sox fan. The Sox made headlines Tuesday afternoon when reports indicated they were close to adding right-handed reliever Kendall Graveman to bolster the bullpen. It looks like they aren't done yet either. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports the South Siders are still seeking premier talent.
Nightengale suggests the White Sox are seeking a starting pitcher like Robbie Ray (2021 AL Cy Young Winner) and a second baseman like Marcus Semien. It begs the question: what exactly does that mean though, Bob? Are the Sox actually competing for their services, or is this another 'seat at the table' situation?
The White Sox won the AL Central in 2021. Despite injuries decimating star players at various points, they still won the division by a considerable margin. Adding either of the players mentioned above immediately brings the Sox into another stratosphere. Semien was worth 7.3 bWAR last season and won a Gold Glove. Ray pitched the best season of his entire career, finishing with a 2.48 ERA across 193.1 innings.
Who knows? Maybe Jerry saw the success of the team that brought fans flooding into the park and he's decided to bring in premier talent. A seat at the table is no longer sufficient, it's time to bring in the big fish and win a World Series.
