It's one step forward, one step back for the Chicago White Sox. The club reinstated Andrew Vaughn from the 10-day injured list Friday afternoon but placed Lucas Giolito on the COVID Related injured list.
Vaughn last appeared in a White Sox game on April 29. In the ninth inning of that contest, he took a pitch to the wrist that eventually resulted in an injured list stint. On the season, Vaughn is slashing .283/.367/.566 with four home runs and 12 RBIs.
Giolito last pitched Tuesday against the Cleveland Guardians. He went seven strong innings, allowing just one run while fanning five batters. It's worth noting his opponents that night had a slew of COVID cases emerge the following day that resulted in a postponement of the White Sox vs. Guardians series finale. However, it's unclear if Giolito's recent designation is related to Cleveland's mid-week issues.
Though Andrew Vaughn is back on the Chicago White Sox active roster, he won't start tonight's contest against the New York Yankees. Lucas Giolito's next turn in the rotation would likely be Monday against the Kansas City Royals. If he does not clear the COVID list by then, Johnny Cueto is a possible replacement option.
