After a recurring injury to his hamstring, Adam Engel is finally back on the field for the White Sox. In a corresponding move, the club deisgnated Adam Eaton for assignment. The veteran outfielder signed a one-year, $8 million contract before the 2021 season.

Even with a litany of injuries to the White Sox lineup, Eaton seemed to have been falling behind the newly administered White Sox outfield. Andrew Vaughn has shown considerable promise in left field. Brian Goodwin has been a great mid-season acquisition. Gavin Sheets has shown he can fill the big league shoes immediately. Billy Hamilton has been a fan favorite this season off of the bench, so Eaton’s .201/.298/.344 slash line was no longer going to cut it.

Engel’s return and Eaton's designation shows the White Sox have far more interest in an outfield that can help them win now than carrying a liability just because of veteran status. With plenty of formidable members of the lineup sidelined, these roster moves will allow the White Sox to put the best possible product on the field right now.
