It's been nearly a decade since the Chicago White Sox have taken a high-school prospect in the first round of the MLB draft, but they did so tonight.

A Pure Athlete

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound left-hander is a mature, physical player with a lot of size and the potential to grow into his frame even more as he moves through the minors.

He led Southridge to their first 3-A State Championship this past year. Montgomery is an incredible overall athlete, excelling in both football and basketball, where he was Southridge High's all-time leading scorer

"Good left-handed swing that should allow him to hit for average and power. He's most effective when he uses the entire field rather than trying to pull pitches out of the park, and his approach got more consistent throughout the summer"

"Has fringy speed and figures to outgrow the position once he fills out his 6-foot-4 frame. He moves well for his size and should become at least an average defender with a solid arm at the hot corner"

Options in the Field

Scouts say that Montgomery has natural baseball actions as a shortstop and the ability to improve his defense even further with professional guidance. Even with those natural abilities, most scouts project him to shift to third base as he progresses. Montgomery on the other hand is confident in his ability to remain a shortstop.

Impressive Comparisons

Fans of the White Sox should be very happy with Montgomery's comparisons, the most common being the Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager.

Montgomery did commit to Indiana University, and if he decides to forgo the pros he will be draft eligible again in 2023. Should the White Sox successfully lock in their first-round pick, the projected slot value is currently $3.03M.
