There were some extra fireworks between the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers on Monday afternoon as both benches cleared in the top of the ninth inning.

With one out in the frame, Tigers' pitcher Alex Lange hit Sox first baseman Jose Abreu with a pitch to put him on first base. This marked the 21st time Abreu has been hit by a pitch in the 2021 season. White Sox bench coach Miguel Cairo, who was visibly upset in the dugout, gave the umpires an earful and was ejected from the game.

When action resumed, Lange's very next pitch was a ball in the dirt that trickled away from catcher Eric Hasse. Abreu attempted to steal second base but Hasse's throw beat him to the bag, where the Sox slugger put on a hard slide into Detroit shortstop Niko Goodrum. That's when a dust-up between the division rivals ensued in the middle of the diamond.

There were heated verbal exchanges and some shoving going on after the benches cleared, but neither side appeared to throw any punches.

Monday's 8-7 White Sox winner, a makeup of a game originally scheduled for September 22, isn't the last time these two teams meet in 2021. The Sox host the Tigers on the final weekend of the regular season (October 1-3), which will now be an even more intriguing series to watch.
